Knowing treatment for scalp dermatitis or dandruff is important since it is one of the most common forms of dermatitis that affects thousands of people. Scalp dermatitis like anytime of dermatitis is primarily inflammatory, but what is different about it is that it is concentrated in areas where sebaceous glands are prominent such as in the head or in the trunk. And scalp dermatitis is the particular subtype that specifically affects the head which can vary from just a mild case of dandruff to the diffused, dense and adherent type of scaling that is hard to remove.

Although there are many known causes of scalp dermatitis including genetic, environmental and health factors like hormonal imbalance, but the most common cause is the lipophilic yeast, Malassezia genus, have also often been implicated in this condition. Thus most standard therapy for seborrheic dermatitis includes that use of antifungal medications.

Overall health and hygiene is very important in controlling and treating this kind of dermatitis. The use of anti-dandruff shampoos to cleanse the scalp and remove excess oils can help improve seborrhea, and it is advisable to wash hair frequently. Dermatologists also suggest increasing outdoor activities as the sun also help improve seborrhea. But overexposure is not advisable since too much exposure to the sun’s rays may cause sun damage to the scalp.

There are also several pharmacologic treatments for scalp dermatitis available including the use of antifungal preparations and shampoos that contain selenium sulfide, pyrithione zin, coal tar or ketoconazole. These target the lipophilic yeast that seems to be one of the causes of scalp dermatitis and most are available over the counter. It is also advisable to use at least three kinds of shampoo with different kinds of active ingredient, then alternately using these.

These preparations decrease colonization of the lipophilic yeast and anti-inflammatory agents like topical steroids. But since most dandruff shampoos are often too strong that tend to damage the hair shafts, thus it should be helpful to use moisturizing shampoos afterwards to prevent the hair from brittling and falling off. But if scales on the scalp are already dense and diffused scales, it is best to first remove the scales by applying hot coconut oil or olive oil onto the scalp before washing.
